Art and Design

At Parkway Primary School, we believe that Art and Design must be stimulating, exciting and enjoyable. We feel that the Art curriculum at Parkway gives our pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas, images and experiences. Our Art develops creativity, fires the imagination and enables the children to communicate what they see, feel and think.

Here at Parkway, children learn about the styles, tools and techniques used by artists, both in history and those working today. They learn how to review and critique artwork and apply these concepts to their own work. They take inspiration from the work of artists and use their learning to develop and improve their own skills and talent. We believe that children should explore and experiment with their ideas, their use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. We encourage the self-evaluation of work and children are taught how to be resilient to achieve their goals. We share and celebrate our work with others, with satisfaction and pride, and recognise that ‘Every Child is an Artist’.

We believe that it is vital for children to have the opportunity to learn and enjoy Art and Design from an early age. It gives our children the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas and experiences. It fires their imagination, stimulates and develops their creativity, enriches their childhood and inspires their future careers.

‘Art is not just a subject to learn, but an activity that we can practise with our hands, our eyes, our whole personality.’ Quentin Blake.
