The 2014 National Curriculum for Science aims to ensure that all children:

• develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
• develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
• are equipped with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. We understand that it is important for lessons to have a skills-based focus, and that the knowledge can be taught through this

At Parkway Primary School, we are preparing our pupils to become citizens in a twenty-first century world; developing scientific skills and knowledge are essential to modern society and in many aspects of daily life. In order to achieve this, we must increase pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world, and develop their skills associated with science as a process of enquiry. 

We ensure that the pupils ‘working scientifically skills’ are built-upon and developed throughout their time at our school. Parkway pupils will be enabled to develop their scientific skills to become curious, respectful and observant about the world around them, to ask and answer questions and know how they might find the answers to these in practical ways. They will learn about the importance of being fair scientists, how to work confidently and collaboratively with others, when investigating with arrange of equipment, and how to draw conclusions based on their findings, providing opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence.

We aim to prepare our pupils for Secondary School so that they leave us with a good foundation of scientific skills and knowledge on which to build upon in the next stage of their learning.  We make links with other areas of learning, where possible, providing memorable experiences for our pupils, fostering an enthusiasm for Science and enjoyment of scientific learning and discovery.
